A loud explosion occurred near a CRPF school in New Delhi’s Rohini on Sunday, prompting action by multiple security agencies and the police, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Several shops and structures near the explosion site were damaged. However, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
Visuals from the area showed plumes of smoke rising near the school in the Prashant Vihar locality. In another footage, a loud explosion can be heard clearly.
Windows of vehicles parked nearby the area were also shattered due to the explosion, visuals from the spot showed.
According to police, a white powder-like substance was found near the wall of the school and the entire area has been cordoned off by the police. A team of NIA officials reached the spot to ascertain if there were any terror links behind the mysterious blast.
The National Security Guard (NSG) commandos reached the spot where the blast took place. Furthermore, heavy police have been deployed near the school and sniffer dogs are being used to find pieces of evidence.
Social media applications, including Telegram, are being skimmed to find clues related to the blast. Terrorists are known for using such platforms to communicate before carrying out terror attacks.
A team of Forensic Science Laboratory also reached the spot and have collected samples to ascertain how the blast was carried out.
There are several shops near the school’s wall and the loud sound could be due to a cylinder blast, sources said. While the exact cause behind the explosion is yet to be ascertained, no injuries have been reported yet.
Several videos were obtained by India Today, which show the extent of damage caused to shops near the school due to the impact of the explosion. The videos show hoardings of the shops scattered on the roads following the explosion.
“The only possibilities which we think of are a cylinder blast or a building collapse. There was a big cloud of smoke here which stayed for a good 10 minutes. The glass of the shops here has broken, and the hoardings have been displaced,” an eyewitness said.
An FIR has been registered under the Explosives Act. CCTV footage around the area is being scanned to determine the sequence of events and ascertain the cause of the explosion.
